Sump Pump Making Noise

Practical information from Sump Pump Co to help you understand sump pump problems, repair options, water-management considerations, and what to confirm with an independent provider.

A sump pump isn’t silent—normal operation includes some motor hum and water movement sound—but grinding, rattling, banging, or gurgling noises usually point to a specific mechanical issue. Which sound you’re hearing narrows down the likely cause: worn bearings, loose components, a check valve slamming shut, or trapped air in the line.

Sumppumpco Sump Pump Making Noise Main

Grinding or Scraping Noise

A grinding or scraping sound can indicate something is contacting the impeller as it spins—often debris or sediment in the pit, or a worn impeller rubbing against the pump housing. This can also indicate worn motor bearings, especially in an older pump. Removing the pump and checking for debris around the impeller is the first step; if the sound continues with a clean impeller, bearing wear is more likely, which typically points toward replacement rather than repair.

Sumppumpco Sump Pump Making Noise Noise Causes

Rattling Noise

Rattling often comes from loose components—a discharge pipe that isn’t secured, a pump that isn’t sitting level or steady in the pit, or a loose check valve. Because the pump vibrates during operation, anything not firmly secured nearby can rattle in sympathy with it. Check that the pipe fittings, pump mounting, and any pit lid are properly seated and tightened.

Banging or Thumping Noise (Water Hammer)

A sharp bang or thump, often right as the pump shuts off, is typically water hammer—caused by the check valve slamming shut as water flow suddenly stops. This is a distinct, well-defined issue with its own causes and fixes; see Sump Pump Check Valve Problems.

Gurgling Noise

Gurgling can indicate air trapped in the discharge line, which is often harmless and self-resolving, or it can indicate a partial blockage disrupting normal water flow. If gurgling is paired with reduced discharge flow or pooling near the pit, see Sump Pump Discharge Line Problems.

Humming With No Water Movement

A steady hum with no water actually being pumped is a distinct problem from general noise complaints—it can indicate the motor has power but the impeller is jammed or the motor has seized. This is covered separately in Sump Pump Hums but Does Not Pump .

When Noise Signals a Bigger Problem

Occasional, brief noise during startup or shutoff is usually not a concern. Persistent grinding, worsening rattling, or noise paired with reduced pumping performance are signs of wear that are worth addressing before the pump fails outright. See Sump Pump Repair for general troubleshooting steps, or Sump Pump Replacement if the pump is older or has multiple symptoms at once.

For the full range of sump pump issues, see the Sump Pump Problems Guide.

Noise Is a Clue, Not a Diagnosis

Grinding, rattling, humming, banging, or vibration can help narrow the area to inspect, but the sound alone does not confirm a specific failure. Possible sources include the pump, debris, check valve, discharge piping, mounting, or normal water movement. A new, persistent, or worsening noise—especially when paired with poor pumping performance—deserves further evaluation.

Safety note: Keep hands and tools away from an energized sump pit. Disconnect power before touching the pump, float, check valve, piping connections, or other components. Do not work on electrical equipment in or near standing water.
