Sump Pump Discharge Line Problems

Practical information from Sump Pump Co to help you understand sump pump problems, repair options, water-management considerations, and what to confirm with an independent provider.

Discharge line problems show up as water pooling near the pit even though the pump is running, water not exiting the pipe outside, or the pump straining or shutting off unexpectedly. The most common causes are a frozen line in cold weather, a clog from debris or sediment, a disconnected or cracked pipe section, or a discharge point that’s improperly angled and sending water back toward the house.

Sumppumpco Sump Pump Discharge Line Problems Main

Frozen Discharge Line

A frozen or blocked discharge line needs to be cleared without damaging the pipe or creating an electrical hazard. The appropriate method depends on the pipe material, blockage location, weather, and installation. Avoid improvised heating or invasive clearing methods near electrical equipment. If the obstruction is not safely accessible from the exterior outlet, have the discharge system evaluated and cleared appropriately.

Clogged Discharge Line

A frozen or blocked discharge line needs to be cleared without damaging the pipe or creating an electrical hazard. The appropriate method depends on the pipe material, blockage location, weather, and installation. Avoid improvised heating or invasive clearing methods near electrical equipment. If the obstruction is not safely accessible from the exterior outlet, have the discharge system evaluated and cleared appropriately.

Disconnected or Cracked Pipe

Sections of discharge pipe—particularly PVC couplings or the flexible corrugated tubing often used above ground—can separate, crack, or get damaged by lawn equipment, freezing, or age. This lets water drain out before it reaches the intended discharge point, sometimes pooling right back near the foundation, which defeats the purpose of the system. Inspect the visible exterior portion of the line for gaps, cracks, or sagging sections.

Improper Slope or Discharge Point

If the discharge line doesn’t have enough of a downward slope away from the house, or if it empties too close to the foundation, water can pool and re-enter the basement through the same groundwater path the sump pump is meant to manage. Extending the discharge line further from the foundation or regrading the termination point can resolve this, though changes to drainage routing are also something to plan for during a new installation—see Sump Pump Installation.

Distinguishing From a Check Valve Problem

A discharge line problem is different from a check valve problem: a line issue affects water leaving the pipe on the way out, while a check valve issue involves water flowing backward into the pit after the pump shuts off. If water is flowing back into the pit rather than failing to exit, see Sump Pump Check Valve Problems.

When It’s More Than a Line Issue

If the pump runs constantly while working against a blocked or frozen line, check Sump Pump Runs Constantly for related causes. If the pump doesn’t seem to be running at all, see Sump Pump Not Working. For general repair steps, see Sump Pump Repair.

For the full range of sump pump issues, see the Sump Pump Problems Guide.

Safety note: Keep hands and tools away from an energized sump pit. Disconnect power before touching the pump, float, check valve, piping connections, or other components. Do not work on electrical equipment in or near standing water.
